U.S. Senate Finance Committee Opens Advocate Inquiry
Advocate Health Care one of 10 major hospital systems subject to investigation

MAY 25, 2005—In the midst of growing scrutiny of charitable activities non-profit hospitals give in exchange for their tax-exempt status, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chair, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), sent a letter to ten hospitals across the country – including Advocate Health Care. The letter includes six pages of detailed questions that relate to the hospital’s charity care, community benefits, patient charges and collections practices.

Senator Grassley has been conducting hearings over the last year and more are scheduled for this summer. He is working on legislative reform to improve the accountability of non-profit organizations—including hospitals—to taxpayers and potential donors.
