On July 23, 2005, community leaders representing over 500,000 Chicago-area residents came together to sign a Health Care Justice Protocol for Agreement.

The Protocol for Agreement provides a framework to resolve the racial, social, and economic justice issues that have been raised about Advocate Health Care and to foster a constructive and collaborative relationship between Advocate and the community.

Parties signing the protocol are demonstrating a good-faith commitment to reach an enforceable agreement or agreements in the future that are consistent with the values and beliefs of the faith sponsors and the needs of workers, patients, and the community.

The Protocol for Agreement is based on social statements issued by the two church denominations that sponsor Advocate Health Care—the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Church of Christ. The four guiding principles also have a scriptural foundation. Similar to biblical parables, patients, workers, and community groups have been asking for needs to be met – and Advocate neglects to respond. And, as the parable goes, these groups will persist to “knock at Advocate’s door” until justice is met.
